Haunted by Addiction Into Adulthood

addiction

“I needed divine intervention, some outside help, and that inspiration came from Judge Yuille,” he said.

Jackson, who is now 35, had been addicted to drugs since he was a teen.

“My addiction took flight at 15, yeah at 15,” he said.

He graduated from Powers High School and went to the Marine Corps, but couldn’t shake his drug habit. He eventually hit bottom.

He eventually committed a crime and found himself in Drug Court. He’s been clean for two years and as a father of two, he now has motivation to stay clean.”

It’s not what a parent wants to hear. That a teenager’s adolescent drug abuse can haunt them until they are adults.

So interventions are designed with the adult offender in mind as well.

“Some substance abusers in Genesee County are getting clean with the help of a specialized court docket in Genesee County Circuit Court.

It’s known as Drug Court and Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Richard Yuille presides.

This is Adult Felony Drug Court, an alternative to jail or prison for adult substance abusers who’ve committed a non-violent crime. It’s in it’s sixth year with a more than 50 percent success rate.”

This is an individual who completed high school and went through the discipline of the marine corps yet was still plagued by addiction. Most adults have contemporaries with the same history. It is unnerving to imagine, but what must be kept in mind is that the resources for teen crisis intervention are far superior today then what was available even ten years ago.

Parents have access to new therapies and new psychological approaches that hopefully will lead to the day where the twisted knots of addiction can be unraveled and defeated.
