Teen Age Drug Abuse and Venereal Disease

“In the last five years, the rate of reported cases of infectious syphilis among the 15-19 age group has more than doubled, from 10 in each 100,000 of population in 1956 to 22 last year. The rate of reported gonorrhea among teen-agers has risen from 408 for each 100,000 of population to 428. The total rate of infectious venereal disease among youngsters is almost three times the rate for all age groups.”

Let’s face it. Teen age drug abuse combined with present day culture is a recipe for all kinds of sexual disasters. Troubled teens who abuse drugs do not have very high self-esteem anyway. Young girls are always vulnerable to sexual advances and when such vulnerability is further exacerbated by alienation, peer pressure and drug abuse, the likelihood of unprotected sex is extremely high. That combined with the increasing sexualization of younger and younger girls, prurient videos and parents who haven’t attempted to set sexual limits for their kids, well, what else would you expect but a uptake in venereal diseases. Apparently all the public school  attempts at sexual education were a tad ineffective.

Do not rely on assumptions of what your at-risk teens may have been taught about venereal diseases and sexual practices. Schools teach against drugs also and we can see how well that has worked out. Get material on these diseases from the internet and prepare a small educational package for your teen yourself.
