Troubled teenagers make for troubled parents. Most materials are directed at teen age drug abuse and risky teen behaviors but few materials cover the immense satisfaction that parenting can bring.

Parents of troubled teens must always take time to remember why they fight for their teens. If parents have forgotten the possibilities offered in a purposefully led life and the immense fulfillment of a life lived with vigor,joy and honor, how can they ever convey to their teens the importance of protecting and honoring their own lives.

Parents will never have an easy task raising their kids. 150 years ago, mothers often lost their children to disease before they ever made it to adolescence. Their daily burden looked different than today’s parent, but it was fraught with as much fear. Now, the enemy parents face come packaged differently, but the fight remains the same; raising a whole, healthy, honorable human being.

Parents need to have as much a vision for life as they expect their troubled teen to have. Teen age drug abuse simply doesn’t present a problem for the teen who is taught critical thinking skills,given a moral grounding,and given access to quality education.

Take time to refresh yourselves as parents. You can’t lead your family if you are hopeless or your viewpoint grim. Keep your own enthusiasm for life, so that your teen will believe you.
